Bluebird Houses..... have a hole diameter of 1.5 inches and should be hung between 5 and 10 feet off the ground. Place your bluebird houses at least 100' apart. In January start checking regularly for sparrows that will start nesting in your nesting boxes. If sparrows start their nest, clean it out, checking for parasites. You may have to do this several times before the bluebirds find your nesting box. By doing this the sparrows will move on and allow your bluebirds a chance at your nesting box. We do not recommend cleaning the nest out once there are eggs, regardless of the type of bird that produced them.
The nest, built by the female, is composed chiefly of grass, but often contains roots, pine needles, or hair. Bluebirds will lay three to seven eggs which are oval and light blue in color. Eggs are laid from early April to mid-August. The female incubates the eggs which normally takes 13 to 14 days, but can take longer in colder weather. Bluebirds produce two broods yearly, and sometimes three if weather conditions are favorable and food supplies are adequate.
