Commercially made nectar or homemade nectar makes no difference to these little hogs of the feeder. To make homemade nectar, combine 1 cup sugar to 4 cups warm water. Stir to desolve. Cool before placing in feeder. DO NOT ADD FOOD COLORING. The red of most hummingbird feeders is sufficient to attract them. Hummingbirds are very territorial, usually only eating one at a time. So by placing many feeders around your yard, you allow for more hummingbirds to feed.

Hummingbird nectar spoils very easily and can make them sick. Make sure you change out your nectar feeders often, at least once every few days. With the sugar used in the hummingbird feeder, there comes pest. Ants and Bees are attracted to the sweet nectar and can create problems around your feeders. Most feeders come with a bee and ant guard, or one can be purchased for them. Also, make sure to buy the size of feeder in contrast to the number of hummers expected. It is better to have a lot of small feeders placed around your yard, rather than having one large feeder. This cuts down on the territorial fights that will happen around one feeder and allows more than one bird to feed at a time. Finches are attracted to the hummingbird feeder. Buying a feeder without perches will dissuade finches from using it. Most hummingbird feeders do not have perches, as they are not needed by the hummingbird to eat.
