Nuthatches.....nest in natural cavities, old woodpecker nests and nesting boxes with a hole diameter of 1.25 inches. Thier nests consist of twigs, grass, feathers and hair. The male and female usually stay together year round and produce 5-6 eggs with reddish-brown specks. They both will feed the young up until about 2 weeks after the babies leave the nest which is about 14 days after birth. Nuthatches raise a single brood each year.
Nuthatches prefer lots of trees since this is their favorite place to eat. They will visit your feeders often for sunflower seeds, suet and berries. Often taking a morsel back to a tree and hiding it, for later feasting. During the summer when insects are readily available, nuthatches will scour the trees for them. Often seen running upside down, up and down the tree.
