Orioles

are one SWEET bird. The sure way to attract an Oriole, is with sugared food, such as oranges, apples, grape jelly, berries of all sorts, nectar both from flowers in your yard and from a bird feeder. Unlike hummingbird feeders, Oriole bird feeders need to have perches. Orioles main food sources for the summer are caterpillers, weevils, beetles, moths, aphids and a wide range of other insects, but this does not keep them from finding those treats that you put out. Orioles prefer tree tops, so often are missed being seen in your back yard. They are not timid around humans, so listen for their flute like song.

Oriole nest are finely knitted of plants fibers, and other soft materials. These nests are unique in that they hang from the tips of branches and sway freely in the wind. This protects the baby birds from predators such as squirrels. Orioles lay 4-6 eggs that are grayish and scrawled with dark brown and black colors. Females are brown above, tinged orange below, and have white winged bars. Males are black on the head, back, wings, and tail and are orange on the breasts, rump, and shoulder. They nest in deciduous woodland and shaded trees. Before its decline, the American elm was a favorite nesting sight for the eastern bird. They breed from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, and Nova Scotia, south to Georgia and Louisiana. The Oriole winters from southern Mexico southward.
