Cardinals….. are the most well recognized bird today, because of their color and their distinct voice. Cardinals mate for life. If you see a male cardinal in your backyard, chances are the female cardinal is close by. The male cardinal is bright red, while the female cardinal is a dull brown with a reddish tinge. Female cardinals builds their nest of weeds, grasses and twigs in dense shrubs and vines close to the ground, and incubates the eggs. The male brings food to the female and takes care of the nestlings after hatching, while the female lays and incubates a second clutch of eggs. Cardinals will raise their young each year in the same area and bring them to their favorite feeders year after year. Cardinals do not migrate and have been noted to stay in the same area for more than 10 years.
Feeding Cardinals is easy. They prefer fruit, seeds, nuts, cracked corn, and sunflower seeds. Cardinals will feed at many different types of feeders, but prefer the platform feeder the most.
