Finches..... are the most common and widespread feeder birds. Finches tend to be hogs at the feeders, emptying your feeders as often as you fill them. They will set and eat all day long, unlike other birds that eat only early and late in the day. When feeding finches, thistle or nyjer seeds are their favorite, but they will eat at most feeders and dont forget to add a salt mineral block and grit for them.
The finch family is a large one and all males except the Goldfinch are identified by the touch of red around their heads with the exception of the Goldfinch male being bright yellow. The amount of carotenoid pigments in the finches food during the molting season is what determines the depth of red coloring. The red on the male is a sign of verility. The female finches are unremarkable and are a streaked brown color, much the same color as a sparrow, with the main difference being that female finches have stripes on their breast.
Finches are early nesters, beginning in March in most of the country. Most females nest more than once a year, some re-nest even before the first broods are fledged. Finches use a wide variety of nesting sites, but prefers coniferous trees. Nests have also been found in vents, ledges, ivy on buildings, hanging planters, and even abandoned nests of other birds. Females do most of the nest building and all of the incubating, although the male does bring her food. If he does not bring enough food, the female may abandon the nest. She lays between 3 and 6 speckled, blue-white eggs. After hatching, females take egg shells away from the nest. The young develop rapidly and leave the nest after about two weeks. In late summer, young birds form large flocks (sometimes in the hundreds), especially near food sources.
