Hummingbirds.....are attracted to the color red, whether it be the red tubular flowers in your garden or the hummingbird feeder you have placed for them. Just about anything red will attract them to your yard. Once you have attracted Hummingbirds to your yard, they will build their nest in the Y of tree branches. The female builds the nest out of spider webs to hold the nest together and lichens for camouflaging the outside of the nest. She will usually lay 2 eggs in each nest. The male hummingbird is strictly a breeder, breeding wherever he gets the chance, leaving the female to build the nest and raise the young.
Hummingbirds feed on nectar from flowers, hummingbird feeders, small insects and small spiders. Hummers are the only bird in the world that can fly in reverse. Hoovering in and out at feeders to drink nectar. Hummingbirds migrate from Central America and Mexico to all parts of the US except Hawaii, usually in mid April. The return migration is in the fall and depends on the amount of sunlight, not the amount of food.
There are 17 different species of hummingbirds in the United States. Fifteen of these can be identifed by their gorgets (throat) color. The species of hummingbirds and their colors are: Allens - Orange-Red, Anna's - Hot Pink, Black-chinned - Black, Blue-throated - Cobalt blue, Broad-billed - Blue blending to green, Broad-tailed - Ruby Red, Buff-bellied - Green, Calliope - Purple streaks against white, Costa's - Purple, Lucifer - Purple, Magnificent - Rich Bright Green, Ruby-throated - Ruby Red, Rufous - Orange, Violet-crowned - Pure White, White-eared - Emerald green, purple under bill.
