Swallowslive in colonies that range from a few pairs to dozens of birds and live near water and mud. Since the Swallows feet are short and weak, they eat and drink on the fly, usually only coming down to gather mud for their nests. Tree Swallows and Violet-green Swallows will build a nest in a nesting box with a hole diameter of 1.5 inches often taking over bluebird nest boxes. The tree swallow is often confused with the purple martin when in flight. Most swallow families prefer to build their nests of mud, soft feathers, strings and other soft materials. Swallows will lay 4-6 eggs in each nest and incubation is carried out by both parents. The male swallow will sometimes mate to two females at the same time.
Swallows diet consist mainly of insects that fly such as grasshoppers, flys, mosquitos, gnats, beetles and other flying insects. These birds live most of their life in the air, eating insects on the fly. Since swallows are mainly aireal birds, a good pair of binoculars makes it much easier to watch these birds of flight.
